Outreach

CUC's Outreach committee is active in a number of areas, both locally and internationally. So far in 2007, it has hosted a seminar given by a Christian Peacemaker active in Colombia (there is a conflict between developers and indigenous people over oil), has raised funds for Camp Menesetung (the local United Church camp on Lake Huron) and the local Habitat for Humanity projects, supported the travels of two of our young members to Thailand (Erin Falconer) and Toronto (Elizabeth Haist), and, in a major ongoing fundraiser, is working with the larger community in a multiyear project to keep almost a thousand AIDS orphans and impoverished children at school in Lusaka, Zambia.

Twice monthly, Minutes for Mission are presented during the worship service. At least monthly, informal luncheons and snacks are  prepared to raise funds for various projects. In September, there will be a Christmas party to raise money to enable these children in Lusaka to enjoy Christmas.

The Outreach Committee works closely with the Christian Education Committee and the United Church Women to coordinate fundraising activities and to hold information sessions on topics of social interest. Al Gore's book - "An Inconvenient Truth" will be the subject of a forum this fall. We also hope to have a First Canadian speak to us about their struggle for justice.
